Although the movement was started over 500 years ago
by Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the International Society for Krishna
Consciousness (ISKCON) was formally established in 1966 by His Divine
Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Lord Chaitanya
Mahaprabhu established this movement in India and revealed the
recommended method of God-realization for the present age (yuga-dharma):
the congregational chanting of the holy names of the Lord. In
other words, the same Krishna, who spoke the Bhagavad-gita 5000
years ago, had appeared to show how to live the Bhagavad-gita.
God always gives both the perfect teachings and the perfect
example.
Since then ISKCON is a worldwide confederation
of more than 400 temples, guest houses, farms, schools,
spiritual communities, restaurants & congregations. Known the
world over as the Hare Krishna movement, the society spans a
wide range of activities from schools and poor feeding, to
temple and devotional practices and thereby helping every being
in the reawakening of the dormant relation with the Lord.
The mission of this nonsectarian, monotheistic movement is
to promote the well being of society by teaching the science
of Krishna consciousness according to Bhagavad-gita and other
Vedic scriptures as it is through unbroken disciplic
succession. |

His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami
Prabhupada appeared in this world in 1896 in Calcutta,
India. He first met his spiritual master, Srila
Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami, in Calcutta in 1922.
Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, a prominent religious scholar
and the founder of sixty-four Gaudiya Mathas (Vedic
institutes), liked this educated young man and convinced
him to dedicate his life to teaching Vedic knowledge.
Srila Prabhupada became his student and eleven years later
(1933) at Allahabad he became his formally initiated
disciple.
Srila Prabhupada, then engaged for several
years in deep study and writing. He accepted the renounced
order of life (sannyasa) in 1959. After publishing three volumes of
the Bhagavatam, Srila Prabhupada came to the United
States, in September 1965, to fulfill the mission of
his spiritual master. Subsequently, His Divine Grace
wrote more than sixty volumes of authoritative
annotated translations and summary studies of the
philosophical and religious classics of India.
After
almost a year of great difficulty did he establish the
International Society for Krishna Consciousness, in
July of 1966. Before his passing away on November 14,
1977, he guided the Society and saw it grow to a
worldwide confederation of more than one hundred
temples, schools, institutes and farm communities.
